RIVERPORT DISTRICT FIRE PROTECTION COMMISSION
The Riverport District Fire Protection Act, which became law on May 3, 1958, was created to help residents in the communities of Rose Bay, Lower Rose Bay, Bayport, Indian Path, Feltzen South, Kingsburg, Upper Kingsburg, Riverport, Lower LaHave, East LaHave, and Middle LaHave North (up to Alexander Ross's lands at Bear Hills) to get their own fire protection. This law set up a special "District" for these specific communities, dedicated solely to providing fire safety services.
To manage fire protection, the Act established a group called the "Riverport District Fire Protection Commission," made up of six Commissioners. This Commission is an official body whose main job is to create, change, and remove any rules they believe are necessary for fire safety within their District. However, all these rules must first be approved by the Minister of Municipal Affairs. This system provides a clear and organized way for residents to collectively manage and secure vital fire protection services. Commissioners may be contacted for any business related to the Riverport & District Fire Department.

MEET THE COMMISSIONERS

Robert Meyer
Kingsburg
I live in an ancient cape farmhouse that my wife and I renovated in Kingsburg after having lived and worked in the USA for over two decades. We currently are building an architectural and design practice that is influenced on the special and distinct natural and cultural qualities of this region. I serve on the Kingsburg Coastal Concervancy, Kingsburg Community Association and am currently Chair of the Riverport District Fire Commission. It gives me great fulfillment working and accomplishing good things for our community with other like minded folks. You’ll likely see me minding our Icelandic and Fiord horses on our property at any given time.
I was raised in Winnipeg, attended the University of Manitoba before earning my Master of Architecture at Dalhousie University. Professional endeavors took me to Berlin Germany, Boston, New England, New York and LA before returning to Nova Scotia.

Jay Muise
Riverport & Lower LaHave
My name is Jay Muise. I was born and raised in this community and I love it dearly. Currently, I live with my wife and two kids in Lower LaHave. I work on the water for the Canadian Coast Guard’s Small Vessel Fleet, so contributing my time to our local emergency response system when I’m at home was a natural fit. As your representative for Lower LaHave, I welcome any and all feedback or questions you may have about our volunteer fire department. Let’s work together to foster a safe and supportive community.

Istvan Molnar-Szakacs
Rose Bay and Lower Rose Bay
Istvan (or Ish) is a proud resident of Lower Rose Bay with his husband Nicolas, a volunteer firefighter and their adopted chihuahua, Miette. Ish grew up in Halifax and is very happy to be back in Nova Scotia after two decades studying and working in the US and Europe. You’ll find him in the garden, helping out with the RDFD breakfast, exploring and photographing our beautiful coast, volunteering at the DesBrisay Museum, hunting for vintage & antiques and building community through local initiatives.

Faye Mossman
Indian Path & Bayport
Born in the fishing village of Feltzen South, Lunenburg County, I now reside in Indian Path, Nova Scotia.
I am constantly surrounded by animals, both at work and in my spare time, and frequently capture their beauty through photography and painting. I specialize in acrylics on canvas and also spent many years as a wedding photographer.
Giving back is important to me; I have raised funds for those less fortunate by creating and promoting several successful fundraisers. These include designing the "Men for Jenn" calendar, founding the "Saltwater Cowboy" run for children and the less fortunate, and riding 50 km for the "Ride for Cancer".
My professional background includes graduating with a degree in Architectural Drafting and spending several years at a drafting firm. My visual arts are deeply influenced by this architectural foundation, my love of photography, and my strong connection to the ocean and nature. The resulting work reflects my passion for animals, clean architectural design, and the simple beauty of the natural world, expressed through both photography and fine arts.
In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, walking, and swimming in the ocean. I am also a keen rug hooker (that is, a "Hooker").

David Leary
Middle LaHave and East LaHave
Born and raised in Riverport, David is a retired teacher. He was an avid hockey player until his 69th year, and is now enjoying curling. At home, he enjoys watching various television shows and spending time with his cat, Minnie.

Mike Thornborrow
Feltzen South
I am a long-standing member of the South Shore community with a deep personal commitment to public safety and our local volunteer traditions. As the representative for Feltzen South on the Riverport Fire Department Commission, I strive to bring a steady and reliable perspective to the oversight of our essential first-responder services.
Professionally, I have been a licensed funeral director twenty years and am the founder of Personal Care Cremations & Memorial Services. My career has been defined by leading with integrity, managing complex logistics, and providing clear guidance to people when navigating challenging or urgent circumstances. These skills—along with a strong focus on transparent governance—allow me to effectively support our department’s operations and the dedicated volunteers who keep us safe.
I am passionate about ensuring the Riverport Fire Department remains a modern, sustainable, and well-equipped pillar of our community. It is an honour to serve my neighbours in FeltzenSouth, and I am dedicated to protecting the safety and well-being of residents across the entire district.
I am also a longtime member of the Riverport and District Lions Club and enjoy spending time on the water or exploring our local coastline by motorcycle, which further deepens my appreciation for life here on the South Shore.
